Remembering
Dozer Days
On
June 2nd, 2007 Wingra Stone and Wingra Redi-Mix Inc. hosted what
would be their final “Day of the Dozer” event. For
the past 15 years this event has brought great joy to 1,000’s
of people, young and old.
Dozer Days was a day when kids of all ages were able to ride or
operate large pieces of construction equipment, while at the same
time help raise money for a local charity, Thursday’s Child.
All of the money – 100% - from food sales, admission, and
sale of hats & T-shirts went to Thursday’s Child.
The Wingra employees, volunteers and sponsors dedication was phenomenal.
Everyone involved did above and beyond what was necessary to make this event
a tremendous success. As the years went by the crowds grew larger. The amount
of money raised each year also grew, by the end of 15 years Wingra has donated
over $308,000 to Thursday’s Child.
Thursday’s Child helps kids, and Dozer Days helped Thursday’s
Child.
Thursday’s Child is a non-profit, volunteer group run by donations. The
donations are from local people and help local people.
Thursday’s Child gives seriously ill children and their
families a dream come true when they need it most. Often the dream
may be a family vacation. It is a time to make memories that don’t
revolve around hospitals and doctor’s appointments. Families
facing a health crisis are also usually in a financial crisis due
to unexpected medical expenses. Taking a family vacation is out
of financial reach for most of them. Most kids ask to go to Disney
World, others ask for a computer, or to meet their favorite sports
star. Since, 1984, Thursday’s Child has made dreams come
true.
Thursday’s Child takes it name from the Mother Goose nursery
rhyme that says, “Thursday’s child has far to go.”
“For now, we all look back and remember all the fun we have
shared with the families of Dozer Days and the contributions we
have been able to give to the children and families of Thursday’s
Child.” said Bob Shea Jr., Wingra President and a Thursday’s
child board member.
Who knows what the future may bring? Perhaps, someday when we
least expect it, we may see the “Return of the Dozer”.
