It is extracted by drilling and blasting, then crushed into various sizes using specialized equipment. This crushed stone is commonly used as a base material for parking lots, streets, and highway construction projects.
Sand and gravel are mined from glacial deposits formed by the movement and melting of glaciers thousands of years ago. These materials can be easily excavated with loaders when they are above the water table, or removed with drag lines when they are below it. Sand and gravel are primarily used to produce high-quality aggregates for concrete and asphalt. Lower-quality sand, known as fill sand, is also used in large quantities for filling, grading, and leveling on construction sites.
